    There's an advisory proposal up for vote in WI next month regarding the legalization of shooting any uncollared cat without a permit.
    Check out the site for specifics.

    My thoughts on the matter?

    *First and foremost, unless one is an officer of the law, it is NOT legal to discharge a firearm in city limits for any reason.

    *People are failing to take into account the effect free-roaming cats have on controlling rodents. Legalizing cat hunting would present yet another threat to farmer's cats, who already have to deal with tractors, cows, coyotes, and highway fatality.

    *One of the chief arguements in favor of this proposal is that outdoor cats kill too many songbirds. Funny, there's never a shortage in my backyard, despite at least 6 cats roaming my neighborhood regularly.

    * The "uncollared" specification would make it okay to shoot someone's pet...have tattoo ID and ID chip implants is becoming increasingly common in cats and dogs, as well. How is a shooter supposed to tell if a cat is a housepet or feral if the ID is not on a collar?

    *I think more responsibility should be placed on owners to spay/neuter their pet. Getting an animal fixed dramatically curbs the desire to roam far from home (esp. in males, which may roam up to 25 miles in radius when not fixed), not to mention eliminating the chance of creating unwanted stray kittens.

    Personally, I don't think this proposal will advance beyond the advisory stage; I have heard it is being considered elsewhere, though. I do, however, think some opponents to it are getting a bit carried away. The guy who proposed it has received multiple death threats...friggin' people. And we're supposed to be the "intelligent" species...

    Thoughts/comments?

    I think people should find something better to do with their time than to think up these things.

    I have these two cats that I believe belong to my neighbors... they are ALWAYS roaming into my yard, which makes my dog and my grandmother's cat go insane. That usually winds up waking up my napping child. And that results in me being very pissed off. I've thought of shooting them - but I don't own a gun. I've thought of poisoning them - but I'd probably end up killing my own pets. And then I realize... these are probably some child's pets and they would be crushed if "fluffy" didn't come home.

    It's funny that our first response to an animal problem is always "shoot it".

    My first response to inanimate objects is kick it. With humans it's to beat them with a blunt object. I too do not own a gun b/c then you'd all see my picture in the newspaper, headlined... "Midget goes crazy and randomly kills 95% of the greater Cleveland population"

    wouldn't it be something a little more like;

    "Midget goes crazy and randomly shoots 95% of the greater Cleveland population in their kneecaps"
